Liga - Villarreal relegated from La-liga

Villarreal, often touted as a model for smaller clubs to aspire to, were left preparing for life in the second division on Monday after they were relegated following a dramatic finale to the La Liga season.

They looked to be safe from the drop as they held Europa League winners Atletico Madrid at bay with minutes left before disaster struck.
Atletico netted the only goal of the game in the 88th minute at a stunned Madrigal, and then, still only needing a draw to survive, Villarreal heard that Rayo Vallecano had scored in time added on to beat Granada 1-0 and send them down.
"I can't believe it," Villarreal vice-president Jose Manuel Llaneza told Spanish television. "I can't believe there can be so much heartache in only five minutes."
Behind him on the pitch, wealthy Ceramics tycoon and club president Fernando Roig was in tears

The 35-year-old, who this season represented Malaga in La Liga, has decided to end his career and made his announcement in a press conference on Monday.
Van Nistelrooy said: "Yesterday was my final game as a professional footballer. I wanted to play in the Champions League, but it is the moment to leave. I have arrived at my physical limit and I can't play at the maximum level. I couldn't have had a better send-off than this."
He added: "I feel happy that I am the one taking this decision. I would like to thank Malaga, the technical and medical staff for an unforgettable year.
"I am proud to have won collective and individual titles, but my greatest satisfaction was to be able to work day after day, year after year."
Van Nistelrooy scored only four goals in 28 league appearances for Malaga this season as the club secured Champions League qualification for the first time in their history.
The striker will be best remembered for his time in the Premier League with United as he scored 95 goals in 150 league games between 2001 and 2006 following a £19 million move from PSV Eindhoven.

Aguero rewarded with huge fee after title clincher

Sergio Aguero was as good as his word on Sunday when he scored the stoppage-time winner against Queens Park Rangers that sealed Manchester City's first title for 44 years.
The Argentine, signed for a reported 45 million euros from Atletico Madrid, vowed at the time he would "fight to the death" to bring the glory days back to City and with 60 seconds of stoppage time left at the Etihad and the score 2-2 he delivered.
Speeding into the area he was as cool as a cucumber to smash the ball past QPR keeper Paddy Kenny before celebrating by whipping off his blue shirt and waving it above his head and then being buried under a pile of his team mates.
It was his 23rd league goal of an impressive first season in English football and by far the most priceless.
"I'm really really happy," Aguero, husband to one of Diego Maradona's daughters, said on the pitch as ecstatic fans chanted his name inside the stadium following the 3-2 win that nicked City the title on goal difference from Manchester United.
"We can hardly believe it ourselves. We thought the Premier league had gone but thank God it worked out for us.
"We scored twice in the final five minutes. It's absolutely unbelievable.
"It was getting very complicated and difficult for us but we made the most of that five minutes (of stoppage time)."
With former crowd favourite and fellow Argentine Carlos Tevez having fallen out of favour with the club's fans following his public spat with coach Roberto Mancini after refusing to warm up in a Champions League tie in September, Aguero has become the new darling of the Etihad faithful.
"They've treated me very well from the moment I arrived," he said. "Let's hope this is the first of many titles.
"My personal objective is to keep improving as a player and win more trophies. This has given me even more confidence."
